The Grey Whale Inn is a simple down to earth friendly and warm hearted place where everyone is welcome. The building is large and spacious so you have privacy and quiet when you want it. This historical building creates a unique atmosphere and we welcome guests who would just like a tour of the Old Hospital grounds built in 1912. We are informal and you are encouraged to make yourself at home.The Inn is a haven for visiting students to our Living Light Culinary Institute (one block away at the Company Store) learning the art of raw and cooked plant based nutrition and gourmet faire. There are many common areas to explore or just relax in your room. But, whatever you decide to do during your stay at the Grey Whale we are happy to have you and will always to our best to make you comfortable and help you make the most of your stay on the Mendocino Coast.
The Historic Grey Whale Inn is conveniently located within two blocks of many restaurants, shops and galleries in the historic downtown Fort Bragg district . You can walk to the North Coast Brewing Company and sample our Internationally famous locally brewed Beers and listen to Fine Jazz on the Weekends. Laurel Street is home to V-cantos restaurant for a glass of wine and acoustic music. Headlands Café has coffee, desserts and music too. You can find Taka's Sushi, Cowlicks locally made ice cream and unique boutiques like Tangents and Local Artist's Galleries right on Main St. Every 1st Friday the shops and galleries stay open late offering free wine and cheese platters. Five minutes away in Noyo Harbor you can watch the Fisherman come in with the catch you can have on your dinner plate that night at Silvers At the Wharf or Carines Fish and Chips.
The Skunk Train Depot is within two blocks if you feel like taking a leisurely ride into the woods for a day. The Famous Glass Beach is a few minute walk or enjoy an early morning run on the old haul road that leads to Mackerricher Park with its black sand beach and board walk to the tide pools. CV Starr Gym, just five blocks South, offers day passes and two large swimming pools fun for adults and children.
It is a short drive to the Botanical Gardens and the Point Cabrillo Lighthouse. At Russian Gulch State Park you can hike into the waterfall. The picturesque village of Mendocino is only fifteen minutes south on Highway 1 so you can stay at the Grey Whale Inn and make an afternoon excursion to the village. From Pudding Creek to the Navarro River the North Coast has pristine rivers and beaches with magnificent cliffs and tide pools for the whole family to enjoy. During Whale migration months (Jan. Feb. March) you are likely to see pods swimming and playing close to the shore. And don't forget our magnificent Sunsets visible from the outdoor decks atop the Grey Whale Inn.
